Simple lifestyle preferred for leaders by majority of Pakistanis.

According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 66% Pakistanis consider it important for their leadership to travel by train in economy class and, for VIP wards in hospitals to be closed down.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women, from across the four provinces was asked, “If people responsible for political and administrative leadership want to adopt simplicity, then what steps should they undertake?” Regarding government officials’ travel, 66% Pakistanis said that is important for them to travel by train in economy class for at least half of their annual travels, 23% considered it unimportant, while 10% thought it was unreasonable and 1% did not respond. Comparative data over the last few years indicates that Pakistanis consider this an important step towards simpler lifestyle for their leadership. Majority of respondents voted for its importance in 2009 (69%) and 2013 (80%).

Regarding VIP wards in hospitals, 66% respondents deemed it important that they be closed down, 22% considered it unimportant, while 12% thought it was unreasonable. Comparative data over the last few years indicates that this is also considered by Pakistanis to be an important step towards simpler lifestyle for their leadership. Majority of respondents voted for its importance in 2009 (67%) and 2013 (76%).

The study was released by Gilani Research Foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2548 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during April 21 – April 28, 2014. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
