Growing participation in Independence Day ceremonies in Pakistan.

Islamabad, September 23, 2014

According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 75% Pakistanis flew the national flag from their house, while 74% watched special programs on television.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women, from across the four provinces was asked, “If you had a chance to participate in the 14th August ceremonies this year, which of these ceremonies did you participate in?” In response to this question, 75% respondents said they had flown the national flag from their house, while 24% had not and 1% did not respond. 40% had flown the flag on their vehicles, while 59% had not and 1% did not respond. 19% respondents said they had attended rallies on Independence day while 81% had not attended rallies. 74% respondents had watched special programs on television on Independence Day while 26% had not watched special programs.

Participation in these ceremonies has been rising over the past few years after witnessing a dip in 2010, when participation decreased. In August 2010, only 53% respondents had flown the national flag from their house, 13% had flown it from their vehicles, 8% had attended rallies, and 55% had watched special programs on television. Except for 2003, when 95% of respondents said they had flown the flag from their house, participation in each of these ceremonies was at its highest ever in 2014.
