30% Pakistanis say loadshedding in their locality is between 6-8 hours; 22% say between 9-12 hours. GILANI POLL/GALLUP PAKISTAN

According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 30% Pakistanis say loadshedding in their locality is between 6-8 hours; 22% say between 9-12 hours.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women, from across the four provinces was asked “What is the duration of loadshedding in your locality?” Responding to this, 7% said the duration of loadshedding was between 1-2 hours, 21% said between 3-5 hours, 30% said between 6 to 8 hours and 22% said between 9-12 hours. 17% said the duration of loadshedding was more than 12 hours, 2% said loadshedding did not occur in their locality and 1% did not respond.


The comparative chart (presented below) shows the change in loadshedding patterns between June 2009 and March 2014. The percentage of respondents who claimed there was more than 12 hour loadshedding increased from 0% in June 2009 to 41% in April 2013 before dropping down to 20% in October 2013 and approximately 17% in March 2014. Additionally, respondents who experienced loadshedding of 6 to 12 hours decreased between June and September 2009, from 79% to 62% before rising again to 79% in January 2010 and increasing further to 86% in June 2012. By April 2013, this percentage had decreased to 46%, and rose mildly to 50% in October 2013 and 52% in March 2014. Respondents who claimed there was up to 5 hours of loadshedding in their area increased from 20% in June 2009 to about 37% in September 2009 before falling down to 21% in January 2010. There was a further decline in this percentage from June 2012 to April 2013 at 13% and 12% respectively, after which this number increased again to 29% in October 2013 before falling to 26% in November 2013 and increasing to 28% in March 2014.

The study was released by Gilani Foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2622 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during Mar 17, 2014 – Mar 24, 2014. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
