According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 32% say they keep a pet animal or bird. Parrot is the most popular pet.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “Do you have any pet in your home?” Responding to this, 32% claim to have a pet in their home whereas 67% claim that they do not have any pet at all. However, 1% did not give a view.

In a follow up question, the respondents were asked “Kindly tell if you were to keep a pet in your home, which animal would you prefer?” Responding to this, 41% prefer to have a parrot as their pet, 23% prefer dog, 11% prefer rabbit, 10% prefer cat, 6% prefer sparrow, 5% prefer Fish whereas 1% prefer to have turtle as their pet. However 3% did not give a view.

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2663 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during June 17, 2012 – June 23, 2012. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
